Hey all! I skipped another couple weeks and felt bad so here's a post to rant and rave about whatever's on your mind a day late. What's going well and what's driving you crazy?

For today's picture, I feel like showing some more Remedios Varo. It's called Encounter.

Note: I may not get to respond to some of you until tomorrow morning depending on when you reply. I'm spending today and tonight at my girlfriend's place and I never bring my laptop because I get to see her so rarely. But I always try to respond to everyone who replies to these posts so I don't want it to look like I'm ignoring anyone.

New novel. Will not. Sit STILL.

Also: New novel. Does not. Have PLOT. Just a sequence of unconnected events that may not even be in the right sequence.

I find that if I outline first, I lose the impetus to carry through the rest of the story. I know what happens, so I don't have to find out, if that makes sense. And I've only encountered the 'write a sentence first' idea in context of outlining step one. I'll try it, though, thanks.

I'm with you. Normally (anymore), I plot the thing out, but I pantsed the last one. And it was making me crazy, because it was an amusing story about a guy creating a flying weasel for a dying little girl (don't ask. Just... don't), but that's all it was. And it wasn't until I finally realized that it was actually about a guy who shouldn't be insecure but totally is, desperately chasing approval from his wife, that I finally actually like the thing.

And, writing this comment, I just realized that maybe it should also be about her wanting to approve of him, but he's just so damned incorrigible, so that's an element I should stick in there too, if I can. *squint*

Yeah, that's kind of how I am too. Plus it's hard for my brain to jump from stage of character development to another.

Work on an old novel until you figure out the plot of this new one, then.

I have 24 short story subs out right now, and the synopsis of my novelthing is sitting on an editor's desk after a conversation with him at Salt Lake ComicCon.

Stupefying Stories is going to do POD runs of their issues now, and they're also doing their back issues, so I'm going to get to hold my story in my hand. And get paid again. WIN.

I nearly decided to scrub the "I Am the Abyss" project, because the deadline is coming up fast, yo. But I have a complete outline for the damn thing and they say they'll take a partial sub if I don't finish, so what, really, do I have to lose? I really wanted to write this story, so here I am. Writing it. Or, you know, I will be once I finish this comment.

I'm figuring on needing to write 2000 words a day in order to finish the first draft in time to get it even halfway edited, but I think I can do it. SO CAN YOU! *\o/*

Have you thought about subbing to Writers of the Future? Their deadline for this quarter is the end of the month, so if you could throw a spit and polish on something and send it their way, that might get you on the horse. And there are, golly, so many markets. You just can't let rejection crush you, which is hard at the beginning--but I recently had a story published that garnered (literally) thirty rejections before it found a perfect home that didn't even exist when I wrote it.

But this business is rough, and you need to find your own comfort level, and that's okay. Don't let me or anyone else push you into something you're uncomfortable with.

And that goes to show that we all have different ways of doing things. If I tried to write ten thousand words in a day, I'd collapse into a puddle of gibbering goo and take a few days to recover. The fact that you can do that routinely is awesome.

I wish us both good luck as well. This story is way out of my comfort zone, because I suck at description, but I'm going to give it my best shot. I hope to see us both in the table of contents. :)

Draft 3 is practically finished! Personal deadline to send it to next readers is Tuesday, so I'm just reading through and polishing now, waiting for some specific feedback from the first friend I had read it. It's pretty exciting to be at a place where I actually need feedback to know what I need to work on. Even after finishing draft 2, when I felt quite satisfied with it, I already knew where I would need to focus for 3. This time I need someone else to tell me. Can't say that's ever happened before! Most of my questions for my first reader were "does this work?" "is this doing what I want it to?" and I'm hoping for at least a few "yes." Then any edits I want to make based on what she says, and it'll be a wrap!

Now after that's sent out, I'm sure I'll be finding plenty to rant about in my limbo time.

Well, start of school clobbered me and my depression/anxiety/chronic pain has kicked me in the face. So the last couple of weeks too much of my brain has been tasked on keeping me vaguely functional to really spend much time writing.

(Besides, it's hard to tell if a piece is emotionally effective when I don't feel much of anything.)

I've started just carving out time to write, for the sake of my own sanity. Writing functions as a form of meditation for me, taking me out of my own head until I can deal with it again.

I'm almost through the hard rewrite of a Bravely Default fanfiction, and then I'll polish it...next week, probably. ...that thing needs a name. hm.

Finished a story that I had backburnered for at least a year last night. Now I have to proofread it and maybe pad it a little because it seems a little thin at 35K words...

Also my mother has claimed that the next time she sees I'm writing, she'll not disturb me unless it's an emergency, so we'll see how that goes. Haha.

Thanks! Yeah, I hope to get it closer to 40K but it's not a terrible word count now.

I wonder what it's like to finish a story with plenty of time before the deadline? I always seem to get riiiiight down to the wire and then force it all out in one sitting. God dammit.

Ngl though I'm pretty proud of what I just wrote. But I'm sure I'll hate it in the morning.

shrug
