Date: 2014-03-07 06:46 pm (UTC)I think it's good practice to question one's adverbs, because they're an easy group of words to fall back on, and the most-used ones are often better swapped for stronger verbs, but not always. Sometimes what you actually want to do is qualify, or emphasize, and an adverb can be the best way to do that in a particular context.
They're best used sparingly, but like most things best used sparingly, the right bit in the right place can be the cherry on top of a sentence. (And honestly, what would I have said instead right there - "used in moderation"? Not sure how that's superior for its noun. And even "best" is an adverb there!)
I find that in writing, hard and fast rules tend to be nothing but the preferences of people with loud voices.
