Friday Rants and Raves - April 10

Hello again! What's going on in your writing life this week? Anything good, bad, exciting, frustrating, surprising?

As I was looking through my pictures for something to share, I realized that I don't think I've ever picked one of the more expressionist paintings I've saved. I have a lot. So here's one by Josef Čapek called Before the Storm:

I have lost confidence in my current project. I'll keep pushing through but I keep worrying that no one else is going to care about the story. I've got complaints about other books I liked echoing in my head about how "nothing happens". I disagreed with them there but they will probably disagree with me on mine.

Don't listen to those head voices! They're poison.

If you care this much about the story, other people will too. Not everyone, but you're not writing for everyone. You put your caring into the story, and the people it's meant for will love it.

That's what I keep trying to tell myself.

I've been making some progress on draft 4 but struggling a little for the drive to work on it. I ended up unexpectedly planning for some very major changes to plot details and the pacing of information and it's scattered me all over the place. So the lack of direction isn't encouraging, and I haven't pushed myself to formally regroup and work through my plans more methodically. It's also so tempting to just let myself work on my cute dumb little boarding school AU where plot and good writing are unnecessary.

Ooh that sounds frustrating! And I know that temptation to work on something with less pressure on it. I'm sure you'll be able to wrap your mind around what needs to be done though, and then you can get back to making progress.

I don't feel I've much to say these days. Growing up there was something inside of me that wanted to come out. I never doubted it even though I didn't know exactly what it was. I don't feel that connection anymore. Was it merely an egocentric illusion of childhood?

Cool pic, I was always more partial to the impressionists myself. :)
